How to Clean your Makeup Brushes

Makeup brushes are a must have tool if you want to take your makeup application to the next level. Often makeup brushes are a bit of an investment, so it is important to get the most out of your brushes. I am sure many people are guilty of not washing their brushes, or not washing them properly. It is important to keep your brushes clean because it can prevent the spread of bacteria, and it is important to wash them properly so you don’t damage the brushes. Here is a quick how to post about how I clean my brushes.

Step 1: Once you have filled you sink with warm water, dip the brush into the water, but try to only wet the bristles. If you wet the whole brush then over time the glue holding the ferrule (the metal part of the brush) to the handle can start to come loose and your brush can fall apart. You can wet the bristles and the ferrule, but try to avoid wetting the brush higher than that. Also try to avoid leaving your brushes soaking in the water for a long time.

Step 2: Apply a few drops of brush cleaner or a baby shampoo to the wet bristles. If you don’t know where to buy brush cleaner, then baby shampoo is a good alternative because it is gentle and won’t damage the brush over time.

Step 3: Rub the brush onto your hand (or swirl it in a cup with a little bit of water) to help the brush cleaner work through the bristles so the makeup can start to lift from the brush.

Step 4: Then rinse the brush cleaner and all of the makeup off the brush into the sink of water

Step 5: Use a towel to dry off any excess water.

Step 6: You should never dry your brushes with the bristles facing up (eg drying them in a cup). If you dry them with the bristles facing up then water can start to pool in the ferrule, and as I mentioned before, if you get too much water in the ferrule then over time the brush will start to fall apart. You can lay your brushes flat on a towel, but the best way to dry your brushes is by hanging your brushes upside-down. The Benjabelle Brush Tree is designed to securely hold your brushes while they dry upside-down. If you hang your brushes upside-down then you ensure that your brushes will last longer and it also dries the brushes faster.

So that's how I wash my brushes, and even though it may look like a lot of effort, it is actually very simple and very effective. This method will also ensure that you get the longest possible lifespan out of your brushes, which is important because makeup brushes are generally one of the most expensive parts of your makeup collection.
